In July of 2003, our former K-9
"Quincy" passed away and left a major gap not only in our ranks but
in our resources. It was quickly decided to continue the program
into the new year. The support from the public was outstanding and
nearly twice as much of the needed funds were raised to help pay the
costs for getting a new K-9 unit off the ground.
In 2004, Officer Robert Strand was teamed
with K-9 "Chase" and began patrol of our streets just before the summer
tourist season. They were involved in a variety of critical situations
that were very helpful to law enforcement and other public safety
agencies around the region over the last two years.
In may of 2006, K-9 Chase passed away due
to unknown medical reasons. He was only a few years old.
Officer Robert Strand was again chosen to
attend a special
school down in North Carolina in the late fall of 2006 to get paired
with another dog. "Macho" was a three year old German Shepherd imported
from England and was purchased from Ocard Knoll Kennel in Angier, NC.
The school Strand attended was two weeks long.
K-9 units offer several benefits to Law Enforcement from detecting
illegal drugs to tracking scents in apprehending criminals to helping
search for missing people.
For the summer of 2011, the United States
Police Canine Associations (USPCA) will be holding their National Trials
here in Detroit Lakes. It is a very high honor to be the hosting city
and Law Enforcement K-9 teams from all across the nation will be here to
train and compete for the week.
