2008 Water Carnival:
Water Fights and Softball!!
"God
made Police Officers so Fire Fighters would have Heroes.."
That statement above was
worn on our team t-shirts and the opposite saying was worn by the Fire
Department. Despite the competition and 'burning words' (no pun
intended) thrown back and forth between our teams during such
competitions such as the water fights and softball games, its all in the
spirit of fun. We have an excellent relationship with our other local
emergency officers from Fire Fighters to Emergency Medical Service
personnel. These are all great guys to work alongside with and have fun
with.
For the 2008 annual games -
the Detroit Lakes PD took 2nd overall place in the water fights. Our
proudest achievements were defeating the Fire Department and Lakeshirts
teams. Both defeated us last year so we were ready for some payback.
Lakeshirts won the 2007 water battles so winning against both the
defending champions and our rivals in the Fire Department was a sweet
victory.

were fair.

About the Water Carnival
The
annual water carnival is a week-long summer celebration with something
for everyone. Activities from dances to boat races fill the streets and
waters of Detroit Lakes all week long. The finale is the water carnival
parade - which is the largest of its kind in northern MN and usually has
about 2 hours of displays, entertainment, floats, and various
water-themed demonstrations. The turn-out is always very high and
features groups from as far away as the Winnipeg Police and Shriner's hospitals to
local State Legislators and classic muscle cars.

DLPD always leads the parade route as
things get underway at about 1300 hours. Squad car unit 802 was selected
for the royal detail treatment to serve as leader.

Chief Keena flashes hand
signs to his 'home boyz' (fellow Officers) along the route.

2008 marked the 73rd Parade of the
Northwest by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees. Thousands upon thousands of
people line the streets all the way from downtown to the lake.
Performers and visitors alike come from hundreds of miles away to watch
the largest parade in the region.
